SPIRIT LIBERIA PROJECTS PRISON MINISTRY With our focus being to spread the gospel of Christ to the poor people of Liberia, we are so excited to be a part of ministering to inmates each week. Bestman Todawiah, Spirit Liberia's Ministries Coordinator, heads up the visits each week. As a fairly new ministry program for Spirit Liberia, we are continuing to see the benefits of ministering to this incredibly dark sector of Liberia. As you can imagine, this is not a safe environment physically or spiritually. Many people in the prisons are there for heinous, gruesome crimes including crimes of witchcraft and ritualistic killings. In America, we do not see these sort of crimes on a regular basis. Because of this, most of us do not realize the spiritual depravity that prisons like the ones we visit are dealing with. Could you imagine driving in the countryside in America and driving past a street sign that states "It is illegal to sacrifice other human beings". You would either laugh and think it was a joke or begin wondering what this world was coming to. But in Liberia, as you drive through the interior, you will find billboards that state "SAY NO TO RITUALISTIC KILLINGS". We are currently working on plans to begin monthly trips to both Bong and Nimba County to the large prisons in the interior. These prisons are difficult to get to. Very few people are able to make it to these prisons so the inmates become very lonely. The need to reach out to these people is significant. Just recently, Bestman and Dan Gjerstad (American Evangelist) and Dan's oldest son, Ashton, went to speak at the prison. While they were there, they passed out soap to the inmates. They realized toward the end of the giveaway that they were a few bars short and they would not have enough. Because the inmates receive so little care, it created a mob scene. Unfortunately when you go into the prison to minister, they open the gate, let you in, and then lock you in from the other side. They do not protect you once you are inside. The mob scene was getting crazy and Dan truly feared he would see his son die that day. Only by the grace of God did they get out without harm. This is no small task and we do not take lightly the responsibility set before us. Please keep this ministry in your prayers. We have been making great headway in this area and will continue to update you on our progress through the RootSource Newsletter and other communication. |
